Before Semrush existed, running a Semrush free trial would have seemed like science fiction. When I was building 1ShoppingCart.com in the early 2000s, keyword research meant opening a spreadsheet and manually visiting hundreds of websites to read their meta tags — recording every keyword I found by hand. When GoTo.com launched their PPC platform it felt like a revelation. Suddenly we had actual search volume data.
But we still had to target Yahoo, GoTo, AltaVista and half a dozen other search engines separately. What Semrush surfaces in seconds took me weeks to implement. That context is why I take a Semrush free trial seriously — and why I want to make sure you get every possible drop of value from your 7 days.
What You Get in the Semrush Free Trial
The Semrush free trial gives you 7 days of full access to your chosen plan — Pro ($139.95/month) or Guru ($249.95/month). A credit card is required but you will not be charged until day 8. Cancel any time before that and you pay nothing.
During your Semrush free trial you get access to:
- Keyword Magic Tool — over 26 billion keywords in the database
- Site Audit — full technical SEO health check
- Domain Overview — complete analysis of any domain including yours and competitors
- Position Tracking — monitor your rankings for target keywords
- Backlink Analytics — full backlink profile analysis
- Competitor Research — see exactly what is working for your competitors
- Content Gap Analysis — find keywords competitors rank for that you don’t
Seven days is enough time to make a fully informed decision — if you use them correctly. Most people don’t. They log in, click around, feel overwhelmed, and let the trial expire without getting any real value. This guide fixes that.

Day 1 — Site Audit and Domain Overview
The moment your Semrush free trial activates — run a Site Audit on your own domain before doing anything else. This is the most important single action of your entire trial.
Go to Site Audit → Create Project → enter your domain. Semrush will crawl your site and produce a full technical SEO health report — broken links, missing meta descriptions, duplicate content, page speed issues, crawlability problems. Every issue is prioritized by severity so you know exactly what to fix first.
While the audit runs — open Domain Overview and enter your own domain. You will see your Authority Score, organic search traffic estimate, number of keywords you rank for, and your backlink profile at a glance. This is your baseline — the number you are trying to improve.
Then enter your top competitor’s domain into Domain Overview. Compare their Authority Score, traffic and keyword count against yours. That gap is what you are working to close. By the end of Day 1 you will know exactly where you stand and what your biggest technical issues are.
Day 2 — Keyword Magic Tool
Day 2 is the one most people say changes everything. The Keyword Magic Tool is Semrush’s most powerful feature and the one that delivers the clearest immediate value during your free trial.
Go to Keyword Magic Tool → enter your main topic or service. Semrush will return thousands of related keyword suggestions with search volume, keyword difficulty, cost per click and competitive density for each one.
The goal of Day 2 is to build your target keyword list. Filter by:
- Keyword Difficulty under 50 — realistic to rank for without massive domain authority
- Search Volume over 100/month — enough traffic to be worth targeting
- Intent: Informational or Commercial — depending on whether you want traffic or buyers
Export your filtered list to a spreadsheet. This becomes your content roadmap — every keyword on that list is a potential post, page or review. I built my entire content strategy around a manual version of exactly this process. The difference is what used to take weeks of spreadsheet work now takes an afternoon.
Day 3 — Competitor Research
Day 3 is where your Semrush free trial starts paying for itself in a different way — intelligence. Go to Organic Research → enter a competitor’s domain.
Semrush will show you every keyword your competitor ranks for, their position for each keyword, the estimated traffic each keyword sends them, and the URL of the specific page that ranks. This is the competitive intelligence that used to require expensive agency retainers — now available in seconds.
Look specifically for:
- Keywords in positions 4-15 — these are pages where a competitor is ranking but not dominating. These are your opportunities.
- High traffic pages — what content is driving the most visits to your competitor? Build something better.
- Keywords with high volume and low difficulty — where competitors are ranking easily that you haven’t targeted yet
Run this analysis on your top 3 competitors. Add the best keyword opportunities to your Day 2 spreadsheet. By the end of Day 3 you will have a content strategy built on real competitive data.
Day 4 — Backlink Audit
Backlinks remain one of the most important ranking factors in SEO. Day 4 of your Semrush free trial is for understanding your backlink profile — both the good and the potentially damaging.
Go to Backlink Audit → run an audit on your domain. Semrush will analyze every site linking to you and flag any toxic or suspicious links that could be harming your rankings. If you have toxic links Semrush will help you compile a disavow file to submit to Google.
Then go to Backlink Analytics → enter a competitor’s domain. You will see every site linking to your competitor — these are potential link opportunities for you. Websites that link to your competitors may well link to you if you produce better content on the same topic.
Export your competitor’s top linking domains. This becomes your outreach target list — the sites most likely to link to quality content in your niche.
Day 5 — Position Tracking Setup
Day 5 is about setting up the infrastructure that will show you whether your SEO efforts are working. Go to Position Tracking → Create a new project for your domain.
Add the keywords you identified on Days 2 and 3 — the ones you are targeting or already ranking for. Semrush will track your position for each keyword daily and show you whether you are moving up or down in the rankings.
This is genuinely one of the most motivating tools in the Semrush suite. Watching a keyword move from position 28 to position 14 over a few weeks tells you your content strategy is working. Watching it stay flat or drop tells you something needs to change.
If you subscribe after your Semrush free trial this data will compound over time — giving you a historical picture of your ranking progress that becomes increasingly valuable the longer you use it.
Day 6 — Content Gap Analysis
Day 6 is one of the most underused features in any Semrush free trial. Go to Keyword Gap → enter your domain and up to 4 competitor domains.
Semrush will show you keywords your competitors rank for that you don’t — your content gaps. These are proven search terms with real traffic that your site is currently invisible for. Every keyword in that gap is a content opportunity.
Filter by:
- Missing — keywords all competitors rank for but you don’t appear for at all
- Weak — keywords you rank for but in much lower positions than competitors
Add the best opportunities to your keyword spreadsheet from Day 2. By the end of Day 6 you will have a comprehensive, data-driven content plan built entirely on what is already proven to work in your niche.
Day 7 — Decision Time
On Day 7 of your Semrush free trial you have a decision to make. Here is how to think about it clearly.
Subscribe if:
- You found keyword opportunities you want to pursue — and you need Semrush to track whether your content is working
- You identified competitor content gaps worth filling
- Your site audit revealed technical issues you want to monitor as you fix them
- You are serious about growing organic search traffic as a business channel
Don’t subscribe yet if:
- You haven’t published enough content yet to justify ongoing rank tracking
- Your site is brand new and you haven’t implemented your Day 2 keyword list yet
- You need to fix the technical issues from your Day 1 audit before monitoring again
There is no wrong answer. Semrush is a tool — it only delivers value if you are actively using the insights it surfaces. The trial has given you a clear picture of your SEO landscape. What you do with that picture is what matters.
